“HOPE”, Na Hong-jin’s First New Work in 10 Years After THE WAILING, Becomes the Year’s Biggest Sci-Fi Thriller
The return of Na Hong-jin, the director behind celebrated works such as The Chaser, The Yellow Sea and The Wailing, known for an intense storytelling signature that keeps audiences on edge from start to finish, whether through blistering action or a suffocating dread impossible to look away from.
In 2026, Na Hong-jin returns to the big screen with the new work HOPE, the year's biggest sci-fi thriller, despite having been away from directing feature films for nearly 10 years. HOPE has already caused a stir since its debut at the Cannes Film Festival 2026, receiving a standing ovation lasting up to 7 minutes. It also marks a shift from Na Hong-jin's signature suspense into a blockbuster sci-fi film featuring a mysterious threat, action sequences, pursuit, and survival, with every action scene built on meticulously designed movement.
Throughout his career, Na Hong-jin has been one of the directors with a clearly defined signature for building tension through high-pressure situations, characters pushed to their limits, and an intense narrative rhythm, from The Chaser and The Yellow Sea to the suffocating dread of The Wailing.
HOPE is a blockbuster sci-fi thriller that turns a peaceful village into the site of an intensely thrilling chase. In cinemas from 9 September.
